Workers' Compensation Class Codes Related to Landscaping
Employees are grouped into classification codes based on what they do for their job. The National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) currently utilizes nearly 800 class codes to help insurance companies categorize employees. Insurance companies create a manual rate for each class code in order to price a policy.
Properly classifying workers is an important part of the quote process. Mis-classified employers may end up paying too much for coverage or owing too much after an audit.

Landscaping services often include beautification work associated with laying out grounds. This includes retaining walls, stone patios, planting trees and shrubs and erosion control. Clearing and grading may be necessary to a small degree. Sod installation is also included under this NCCI class code.
Landscaping services are often provided in conjunction with lawn care services: class code 9102. A business will need to keep clear payroll records documenting work performed in each class code in order to divide payroll during an annual workers' comp audit. Otherwise an insurance company will apply the most expensive class code to the payroll.
