Workers' Comp Coverage for Staffing Agencies
Temporary staffing is a labor intensive business and often has many unknown variables. Among the chief underwriting concerns for insurance companies are potential employee misclassifications and agencies assigning employees to prohibited class codes. A lot of standard markets do not write staffing agencies because they have not been profitable on their books of business.
We’ve been helping staffing agency owners find more affordable coverage for over 15 years. Our experts understand the underwriting requirements from the insurance companies and we know how to negotiate the lowest rates on coverage. That’s why we’ve developed staffing programs designed to help you get the best rates and most flexible payment options.

Workers' Comp Insurance for Temp Agencies
Employees are grouped into classification codes based on their job duties and work functions. The National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) currently utilizes nearly 800 class codes to help insurance companies and agents categorize employees for rating purposes. Insurance companies set a base manual rate for each class code in order to begin pricing a policy.
Properly classifying workers is an important part of the quote process. Mis-classified employees can cost small businesses thousands of dollars. You could end up paying too much for coverage or owing more money after an annual audit.
Our Staffing Agency Insurance Programs
We have worked with our insurance carriers to offer workers' compensation coverage options to staffing agencies who meet carrier underwriting requirements and can demonstrate management know-how and a commitment to managing claims. Our carriers are looking for select staffing agencies that have experienced management teams or owners, as well as a track record of minimal workers' comp losses.
Some of our insurance company programs have minimum premium requirements exceeding $5,000 and may require at least 3 years in business prior to offering a quote. We continue to have success with our staffing program and continue to update and relax some of our underwriting requirements with underwriters. Interested staffing agencies should contact us to determine whether or not we have a current market in your state that fits with your current agency profile..
Our most successful candidates for our Target Programs include nurse staffing, long-term contract employment, project staffing, and agencies with a more homogenous group of "lower-risk" class codes. Smaller agencies and new start-up agencies are the most difficult to quote with one of our carriers outside of the State Insurance Fund. We do help staffing agencies start-up within their state pool and help transition them to standard markets as soon as their first renewal.
Alternative State Class Codes for Staffing:
Sometimes a state will deviate from the industry class code recommended by NCCI. Instead of the NCCI code, they may require the utilization of a state specific class code for certain business segments.

- Clear company policy violations

Staffing Agency vs Temp Agency?
Most people refer to staffing agencies as temp agencies and vice versa. Traditionally, a staffing agency was known as an employment placement agency. Employees placed at a customers business are not employees of the staffing company. Their wages and the cost of insurance is paid by the customer and the staffing company receives payment separately for their service.
Temp agencies supply workers to a customers’ business for limited periods of times and those employees are not expected to be hired on a permanent basis. Temporary agencies typically pay the placed employees and cover the cost of insurance and taxes. Temp agencies receive more compensation but they have a much higher overhead.
